Essa frase de Isaac Newton consta em sua obra Opticks, de 1704. O tratado aborda a reflexão, refração, difração e cores da luz, aspectos intimamente ligados à fotografia.
Color is a perception of light interpreted by the brain from the observation of how the different frequencies of the light spectrum are absorbed or reflected by objects. Thus, the colors we see do not really exist: they are interpretations of the brain about variations in the frequencies of electromagnetic waves, which we understand as light. They are just sensory experiences – ways the human mind has found to organize and give meaning to the invisible physical world.
Furthermore, assuming that there are no two identical beings and, therefore, no organic system works exactly like another, it is reasonable to conclude that people do not see colors in the same way.
It was in the midst of this kind of thoughts that I decided, a few years ago, to try to work with a range of the light spectrum invisible to the human eye: the infrared.
The experiment became language. The combination of filters with different wavelength blocks, the long exposures, the specific light situations, the chosen subjects and the possibilities of treatment or digital revelation have opened up a fascinating universe of possibilities to represent the landscape from a completely unusual perspective.
In view of the greater purpose of communicating on environmental issues, the purpose with this type of particular representation in landscape photography is to circumvent the visual drowning of our time, after all, seeing the invisible is an opportunity to relearn to see the essentials. Due to the aesthetic peculiarity of the images, I hoped to achieve prominence in the mind of the observer, bringing reflection and fostering the appropriation of nature as a fundamental and primordial part of our lives and not as an entity separated from our existence.
